Review: 1, 2 Step Hydrating Pack

This mask comes along in Fabulous Finds August 2012. It’s one of the items that made the beauty box worthwhile. Its the My Beauty Diary 2-Step African Hydrating Pack of Mango Moisturizing Mask. My Beauty Diary is a famous brand of facial mask from Taiwan.

To me, the concept of this mask is pretty new where it comes with a mask and emulsion, all in one which its why its called a 2-step mask. I wouldn’t think that this is troublesome because after you’ve removed the mask, you will still have to continue with your skincare regime. The emulsion is a bonus.

It comes with an instruction on how to use it which is apply the mask for 20 minutes on cleansed face and after removing it, massage the essence residue over the skin. For this mask, here is the description;

‘The Mango Moisturizing Mask is a highly effective moisturizer that and nourishes your skin. African mango tree seeds essence that will protect your skin against severe weather conditions and pollutants. Combined with the sea coconut essence that is unique to Africa is rich in cream fats that provide the gentlest nutrients of unprecedented quality. It injects layer upon layer of water-based energy onto your skin and keeps it energized.’ – My Beauty Diary

Here is the emulsion which is known as the Myrtle Rejuvenation Emulsion. The emulsion comes in a small sachet which is attached together with the mask sachet. Apply the emulsion evenly after the mask with an adequate amount. Here is what the emulsion does,

‘Moroccan Myrtle, also refered to as Downy Rost Myrtle. Myrtle Rejuvenation Emulsion has a delicate fragrance and astounding renewing properties. Moisturizing, brightening, and tightening pores. Nourishes your skin with milk-like nurturing agents, giving it lasting elasticity and a smooth as silk texture and suppleness that any one can wish for. Combines the essence of frankincense from Somalia, Africa to produce the most desirable effects on your skin. ‘  – My Beauty Diary

The mask is a sheet mask and it comes with protective film to avoid the sheet mask from tearing. Its soaked with the essence and has a mild fruity mango scent. There’s not much of essence leftover in the sachet.

I forgot to snap a photo of before using the mask but I promise that you can still tell the difference.

  • With mask – the size of the mask is quite large, I folded the mask at the sides of my lips to cover nicely on my chin. I snipped some slits on the mask  at the eye and nose area for it to fit accordingly to my face. The mask at the cupid’s bow area is big enough that it covers my upper lips.
  • After mask – skin feel more supple, awaken and moisturized. The excess essence absorb easily into the skin after massaging.

Time to apply the emulsion! Although in the instruction, it is mentioned that I am suppose to use an adequate amount but I use all of the emulsion at a go. The texture is like lotion and I was a little worried if it will be too rich for my skin. Oh yes, that’s my cat sleeping on my bed.

I took my own time to massage the emulsion and to my surprise, my thirsty skin absorbed it quickly. My cheek and chin area is super dry and this 2-step pack, it has help to relief the dryness. My skin has also brighten up, more even and radiant.

I would say that my cheek and chin area dryness has been relieved up to 60% but it didn’t last very long because the next day it feels dry again except for the t-zone. I love the instant effect and I only have one pack, maybe there is a need of a few pack to maintain the effectiveness. Plus, the emulsion is not oily and its a great bonus combination with the mask. I would say this mask is very handy when it comes to travelling, you could cut down on the amount of skincare products that you should be carrying since it comes with emulsion.

Weird as it is, the back of the mask sachet doesn’t come with any English description like how the Southern France Apricot Mask is. It’s all written in Chinese and I don’t know how to read them, eek >.< . By just reading the name of the mask, I get the idea that rice will help to reduce oiliness and brighten complexion, peptide is one of an anti-aging ingredient and it will help in reducing wrinkles and firms skin.

The mask size is just as how Southern France Appricot Mask is, slightly covering my upper lips for a bit but it fits nicely on my face. By using this mask, I think I get the idea why some mask includes the plastic film along. It is to avoid from it tearing apart when unfold them. This is because when I opened the sachet, I found the mask is all wrinkled up. Its messy in a way that it’s difficult to unfold and possibility of tearing it is very high because its all soaked up with essence. By unfolding the mask using the plastic film, I got less worried but still have to be careful and gently unfold it. Look at that wrinkly mask made me look like Naruto~

The only thing that doesn’t make me look like him is his yellow hair and orange jump suit. The mask doesn’t have much smell and this time the essence is just at the right amount, that there’s no essence dripping at all. However, the result isn’t as great as I thought. It did helped on moisturizing my skin and kept my skin well hydrated leaving it soft and smooth but other than that I don’t see any difference. My skin hasn’t age much and probably that’s why I couldn’t see if it helps on reducing wrinkles but I do hope this mask is preventing it from happening. If you been following, I have stated that I’ve purchased this mask for only RM1 here. So I guess this mask stands at the average and not much to complain.

  • Hydrating
  • Did not tear when unfolding together with plastic film
  • Enough essence that it did not drip
  • No smell
  • Cheap

  • Doesn’t do much other than hydrating

Beauty Diary Southern France Apricot Mask Review

I started to use my Beauty Diary Masks ever since I’ve mentioned they were dirt cheap masks. Being curious yet worry about how it will turn out later but this mask did not disappointed me, in fact, I’m amazed how great the mask worked on me. I’m starting to think that this mask worth every penny now!

As I opened Beauty Diary Southern France Apricot Mask sachet, it  doesn’t really have any smell but seeing a mask soaked with lots of essence. I took out the mask and found out there’s a plastic film that comes with it. I think it’s unnecessary for the film to be around, can anyone tell me what the purpose of it?

The essence was too much and it was dripping out of the mask when I took it out from the sachet but I didn’t waste it. I applied the excess essence onto my neck. The back of the mask sachet has description in Chinese (which I don’t know how to read) and ingredients listing in English. I browse on the internet to find out more details of this mask and found it’s description:

“My Beauty Diary Southern France Apricot Mask softens, smooths and highly moisturizes the skin. Apricot extract from southern France provides excellent moisturizing effect. It quenches the thirst of skin, leaving dry skin keenly comfortable. The skin surface will be inscrutably velvety to the touch. Added with extracts of highly moisturizing grain, such as oat, job’s tears and hydrolyzed rice protein, it gives more in-depth nourishing and nursing effect to dry skin. The stratum corneum is fully soaked in moisturizing ingredients. It maintains skin’s suppleness, elasticity, fairness and clearness. It is suitable for normal skin. It is especially recommended for dry skin and combination skin that tends towards dryness.”

How to use it:

  • After cleansing and toning steps, tear off the package of the mask and gently place it on the face.
  • Leave on for about 20 – 30 minutes. Then remove the mask.
  • Massage the remains, if any, into the skin. Follow with normal skin care procedure

Ingredients: Purified Water, Glycerin, 1,3-Butylene Glycol, Proplene Glycol, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, Coix Lacryma-jabi (Job’s Tears) Seed, Triethanolamine, Polysorbate 20, Methylparaben, hyaluronic acid, Canthan Gum, Sodium PCA, Citric Acid, Algae Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Hydrolized Rice Protein, Sorbitol, Alow Barbadensis Gel, Gentiana Lutea Root Extract, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Extract, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Acer Saccharum (Sugar Maple) Extract, Citrus Anrantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Extract, Styrene Acrylaes Copolymer, Dimethylsilanol Hyaluronate Carbomer, Polyglutamic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Fragrance.

I’m in love with this mask ♥! The mask didn’t provide enough slits  around it but only two near the chin area. I had to make small folds at the cheek area and the opening for lips was a little small that it covered my upper lips. Although the thickness of the sheet is quite thin, but the result was amazing! After removing the mask , I crumpled the mask,  start using it to wipe on my face and I massage my face. It left my face feeling so soft, hydrated and bouncy *poing~*.

At first, I was feeling skeptical that I do not have to wash my face after the mask because I was afraid that it could be leave my skin feeling sticky but I was wrong. The next morning, my face was all glowing and the mask didn’t break me out. Also, I notice my acne scars are less visible. They are reduce in terms of the redness and size. I guess it’s alright to continue using this mask.

  • Cheap – only RM1
  • Left skin velvety soft, smooth and hydrated
  • Reduce acne scars
  • No sticky feeling after the mask
  • Making my skin glow

  • Dodgy – the price for this mask & sold in night market
  • Thin sheet
  • Insufficient slits around the mask

My rating: 4/5

Ever Purchased Dirt Cheap Mask?

I love going to night markets for the variety of food, clothings and etc. At one point, I just found real bargain face sheet masks.  There are a few brands from the stall and most of them were Beauty Diary. Guess how much were they? It’s only for RM1 per piece, shocking O_o. I couldn’t hesitate it and chose 10 pieces of it because I was really in need of sheet masks. During the purchase I asked the seller how did they manage to sell so cheap when in our local drugstore is quite expensive. She explained to me regarding on licensing which they do not have that is why is far more cheaper.

Despite of being cheap, many said they are most probably fake. I’m not too sure myself about this. I’ve looked around for blogs that would have identified this but the spot-ons are just unclear. I even heard comments from my colleague that her friend bought the same mask from night market and two from our different local drugstore, all turned out differently in terms of the smell, sheet texture and results.

One of the spot-on are the incomplete circle  on the key but when I look at all of the mask that I purchased, they all looked the same. It doesn’t look distorted or any kind like so. Maybe I should really compare them with the ones from drugstore.

However, there’s one element that I noticed in some of the mask that I’ve purchased. Some of the back of the sachet of the mask has both English and Chinese language print on instructions, ingredients and where is it from. Some of them just came in Chinese language and where the English prints are suppose to be were left blank. This made the mask seems dodgy!

It left me not using any of it for a month or two but to think about it why not just give it a try. I can’t be giving this to any of my friend after knowing that they might not be original. If it doesn’t get my skin into trouble, I guess its pretty alright to use it?  Hopefully there’s no harm in using it.

Have you tried any of this?
